A list of the books we’re reading with perhaps a comment or two regarding them. This page will be ever changing, but if I make a comment (or one of the Fruit do) about a book, then I’ll post that over on the Back to the Bookshelf page so you can read it again later.

How to Read a Book by Adler and Van Doren
I started this book about two years ago. I thought I finished it, but my underlining stopped at a certain point. I picked up there, and am now working my way through. Two years can really make a lot of difference in understanding, I’ve discovered. When I finish, I plan to go back to the beginning and read it again, this time taking notes and posting them at Simple Letters.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
I read this the summer before my senior year in high school. I was bed-ridden because of an illness, so I sent the list of every-book-a-kid-should-read-before-college with mom to the library and this is one of the books I devoured. I remembered the basic storyline, but not much else. Since I’m so much more sophisticated now {wink, wink}, I thought I’d read it again and try to do the whole literature analysis thing. This is another thing I’m hoping to post about on Simple Letters. In my spare time.
Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana Jr. I never knew how much I liked ship tales until I read, aloud to the kids, One of the 28th by Henty. I thought it was so interesting, all the vocabulary and rituals that seamen use. I picked up Two Years in the hopes that I could learn even more about this interesting topic. I haven’t been disappointed. The vernacular is difficult at times, I have been so lost on the ship (leeward, starboard, fo’csle, windward, port, quarterdeck, etc), and the rigging has my head going in circles, but I am really enjoying this book.
